(November 29, 2024) – Aurora police officers were involved in a shooting after responding to reports of shots fired that occurred at an apartment complex in central Aurora.
At about 9:25 p.m., Thursday, November 28, 2024, Aurora patrol officers were dispatched to the 900 block of South Dawson Way after multiple callers reported hearing sounds of gunfire.
Officers contacted multiple people inside of an apartment complex who reported that a man was firing shots in the parking lot. Around 9:50 p.m., officers were checking the area when they located a man near S. Sable Blvd and E. Kentucky Dr., matching the description given by witnesses, holding a gun.
After giving this man multiple commands to drop the weapon, the suspect instead fired numerous rounds at the officers. Multiple officers returned fire, striking the suspect. No Aurora Police officers were injured. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Medical personnel arrived at the scene and transported the suspect, an adult male, to the hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to survive, and charges are currently pending. His identity is not being released at this time.
Six Aurora police officers were involved in Thursday's officer-involved shooting. They have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with agency policy.

The Aurora Police Department Major Crime Homicide Unit is investigating the initial call for service, including the shots fired in the parking lot.
The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting to determine whether the officers' actions complied with state law.
The Aurora Police Department's Internal Investigations Bureau is conducting an administrative investigation of the entire incident to determine whether the officers' actions complied with agency policies and training.
The investigations are active and ongoing. The information contained in this release is preliminary and subject to change as additional details are obtained during the investigation.
