Fire for Business

The Aurora Fire Department is tasked by Municipal Ordinance with maintaining a level of safety within the community through the enforcement of the International Fire Code. The purpose of this code is to establish the minimum requirements consistent with nationally recognized good practice for providing a reasonable level of life safety and property protection from the hazards of fire, explosion or dangerous conditions in new and existing buildings, structures and premises and to provide safety to the occupant, firefighters and emergency responders during emergency operations. Most commercial occupancies are scheduled for and provided one (1) primary or initial fire inspection either annually or biennially (every other year based on hazard classification) at no charge.

Follow-up inspections by Fire Department personnel will be performed on a timely basis and will be conducted within a time frame that is regulated by the seriousness of the violation, life safety or property hazard, and or appropriate staff availability to conduct the re-inspection. The follow-up inspection regarding Fire Code non-compliance will cause are-inspection fee (approved by Aurora City Council) to be charged to the business owner. The re-inspection fee is established annually and published in the City of Aurora Fee Schedule. Each subsequent fire re-inspection will incur an additional fee until the unresolved Fire Code violations are corrected to meet the standards of the currently adopted fire code ($39.25 first follow-up, $161.00 for each subsequent follow-up).

This policy does not in any way alter the current requirements of the Fire Code, or waive the obligations of any responsible party to meet Fire Code standards. In addition to the potential accumulation of fines due, you may be subject to a possible summons and appearance in court for non-compliance of Fire Code violations and failure to comply regarding life hazards within the community.
