Aurora Fire Rescue quickly extinguished a fire in a single-story, single-family home near 1200 North Scranton Street today at 4:26 pm.
AFR's Ladder 2 was the first unit on scene, where they found a fire in the kitchen of a single-family home. Engine 2 arrived shortly after Ladder 2 to deploy hose lines to attack the fire. Ladder 2 searched the building for people and pets. Engine 3 established a water supply by connecting it to a fire hydrant. Due to their quick and decisive teamwork, AFR brought the fire under control, and no injuries have been reported.
AFR fire investigators determined the cause to be accidental and the origin in the kitchen. No one was displaced.
Cooking is the leading cause of reported home fires and injuries and the second leading cause of home fire deaths. Aurora Fire Rescue reminds our community of the following safety tips:
-
Always remain in the kitchen while frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you need to step away, turn off the stove.
-
For more extended cooking methods like simmering or roasting, set a timer and regularly check food.
-
Keep flammable items like towels, oven mitts, or packaging away from the stovetop.
-
Avoid cooking if you're sleepy or have consumed alcohol, as it can impair your attention and reaction time.
-
Turn off all appliances when not in use.
These precautions can significantly reduce the risk of cooking-related accidents.
