Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire near the intersection of E. 16th Avenue and Nome Street at approximately 6 pm. today.
The first arriving fire crews found a four-story apartment complex with one unit on fire. Fire crews worked diligently to extinguish the fire and prevent its extension into neighboring units, while also searching the unit for people and pets. Fire investigators determined the cause to be unattended cooking, which started in the kitchen.
No injuries have been reported and no one was displaced. No further updates are expected.
As a reminder, never leave unattended burners and always make safety a priority when cooking. The National Fire Protection Association reports that cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Fires start when the heat is too high, so turn the burner off if you see any smoke or the grease starts to boil.
