Aurora Police Department Announces Launch of Online Transparency Portal
Posted on 02/14/2024

(Wednesday, Feb. 14) – The Aurora Police Department announced Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, it has launched its Online Transparency & Accountability Portal.

The transparency portal provides the public access to regularly updated data and information about agency demographics, crime statistics and uses of force.

“The Aurora Police Department’s Online Transparency & Accountability Portal represents our commitment to broader information sharing with the community we serve,” said Aurora Interim Police Chief Heather Morris. “Through this new technology, residents will be able to learn more about what their officers do every day to ensure Aurora is a safe and vibrant city to call home.”

The transparency portal features powerful search functionality, allowing users to filter data by a specific category and/or location. The crime statistics tab, for example, features data about FBI Part I Crimes including homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, arson, motor vehicle theft, sexual assault and theft.

Users can choose to examine all crime data or filter any one crime category by year, police district, political ward, police beat, zip code and/or by neighborhood. The use of force data can be searched in much the same way. Historical data is included for both categories and dates back five years.

The data is regularly updated to provide the public with timely information. Crime statistics and use of force data are updated weekly on Tuesday mornings. Information about agency demographics is updated quarterly.

The Aurora Police Department developed the online transparency portal to promote greater efficiencies in customer service for community members, the media, our professional staff and our elected officials by making data readily available without the need for a formal public information request.

“The portal is another tool that underscores our commitment to be open, honest and transparent about our work,” said Aurora City Manager Jason Batchelor. “We began developing the concept for the portal in 2021, and I am grateful for the dedicated city staff who have turned that concept into a reality. It will help us further strengthen our relationship with the community through accountability and continuous improvement.”

The Aurora Police Department’s Online Transparency & Accountability Portal can be accessed at www.AuroraGov.org/APDPortal. This is an ongoing project and additional features will be added in the future.
