(July 17, 2023) – The Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating after three people died in a single-vehicle crash Sunday night. This crash also left two others in the hospital with serious injuries.
Patrol officers were called to the incident just after 11:00 p.m. at the intersection of I-225 and East 6th Avenue. This is the second deadly crash related to this intersection in 24 hours. Investigations revealed that a Nissan 200Z was driving northbound on I-225 near E. 2nd Avenue. The vehicle lost control on the roadway and crashed into the center median, rolling with five occupants inside. All five individuals were transported to local hospitals where three tragically passed away. The other two individuals suffered serious injuries and are expected to recover. Ages of the individuals are unknown at this time.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, though speed is believed to be a factor.
The Arapahoe County Coroner's officer is responsible for identification and determining cause of death.
Road closures included I-225 north from Alameda to 6th, and south from Colfax to Alameda for approximately three hours.
