Aurora Animal Shelter Celebrates Anniversary

Aurora Animal Shelter Celebrates 40 years
Posted on 06/12/2023

June marks the 40th anniversary of the Aurora Animal Shelter, 15750 E. 32nd Ave. To celebrate this milestone, the shelter has launched an Instagram account - @AuroraCOAnimalShelter and is offering $40 adoption fees on all adult dogs and cats, six months and older through June 17.

When the shelter facility was built in 1983 as the city's first dedicated space for lost pets, it served a population of about 174,000 people. While it's undergone a couple of renovations over the years, the facility now serves nearly 400,000 people and their pets.

"Many animals are ending up at the shelter and need a good home," said Aurora's Housing and Community Services Director, Jessica Prosser. "While the city is working on options to increase the shelter's capacity, we really need the community's support. A pet can be such an important addition to a household, and I encourage those looking for a new pet to first look to the Aurora Animal Shelter for adoptions."

To view animals for adoption, visit AuroraAnimalShelter.org or meet the pet in person at the shelter. No appointment is needed; adoptions are first come, first served. To ensure successful adoption, adoptees must meet the animal's unique criteria and recommendations from shelter staff.

If you are unable to adopt, consider making a monetary donation to the shelter to help with medical care, behavioral rehabilitation or supplies, or an in-kind donation of food, toys, leashes and other products. Click the Donate button at AuroraAnimalShelter.org to view the shelter's Amazon Wish List.

For the sake of the capacity of shelters across the Front Range, the city recommends that families consider alternatives before surrendering to an animal shelter and be sure to do research before moving forward with an adoption.

Before surrendering a pet due to financial hardship, consider the shelter's food bank, which offers pet food and supplies through community donations. Call 303.326.8280 to check availability.
