Hydrant Meter Requirements brochure

Hydrant Meter with BackflowWater can be drawn from hydrants based on the uses described in the current Water Management Plan. Drought conditions are monitored throughout the year and City Council can alter the declared drought stage based on system availability at any time during the year.  Water from hydrants is only allowed for construction purposes, dust control, and soil compaction. All uses must be metered with a meter supplied by Aurora Water. City of Aurora municipal code states that all water drawn from Aurora hydrants must be used within the city limits of Aurora.  It cannot be transported to another jurisdiction.

Backflow prevention is a requirement for using a hydrant and is the responsibility of the user. An air gap is the most desirable, but the situation may require a mechanical device in lieu of or in addition to the air gap. The only acceptable device is an RP with current test data.

Two sizes of meter are available – a 3” meter for larger volume demands and a ¾” meter for smaller volume demands.

Requests to access water from a hydrant can be made by email at [email protected] or by phone at 303.326.8083.

Hydrant meters must be read on a monthly basis for billing purposes. This can be done electronically through the use of cellular digital photographs. Once the required reading(s) are received by the Hydrant Meter Office, a new hydrant use permit will be emailed to the contractor to print out and insert into the hydrant meter sign.

All non-construction uses are considered on a case by case basis and the requestor must submit a form to the Hydrant Meter office detailing the reason for the need. It will be forwarded to the General Manager of Aurora Water for approval. We’ve provided a template for this request.

A refundable deposit is required for the meter prior to issuing the permit. In addition to the deposit, a monthly service charge is assessed as well as the consumption for the month. In addition, a 5% late fee will be assessed on all past due charges after a 5 day grace period. Visit AuroraGov.org/ServiceFees for current deposit amount and hydrant water rates.
