Independent Review Board Recruiting

Purpose

The Independent Review Board (IRB) is designed to assist the Chief of Police in the deliberative process in determining an appropriate level of discipline for instances of sustained misconduct by subject members. The IRB may also review events that draw significant community interest.
– Each IRB panel that is convened will consist of four (4) civilian members and four (4) Police Personnel.
– The City strives to appoint members that represent its diverse population.
– THE IRB process, although significantly supported by the Aurora Police Department, is a function of the Human Resources Department under the control of the Director of Human Resources or designee.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18.
  • Must be an Aurora Resident and registered to vote.
  • Selected members will serve a three (3) year term.
  • Must be able to meet during the business day throughout the year and an occasional evening.
  • Hearings are primarily Mon.–Fri., 8 a.m-5 p.m. and are held as requested. Hearings are closed.
  • Previous municipal, board or commission experience helpful but not required.
  • Completion of the Aurora Citizens’ Police Academy or equivalent is required. To apply for the academy, please go to the academy webpage or call 303.739.6350.
  • This is a voluntary, non-paid position.
