(Feb. 23, 2024) – The Aurora Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian.

About 5 a.m., Friday Feb. 23, 2024, Aurora patrol officers performed a traffic stop on a 2008 Hyundai sedan with no license plates near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Ironton Street in northeast Aurora. The driver initially yielded, and the officer approached the vehicle on foot. When the officer reached the driver’s door, the driver sped away traveling west on Colfax.

The officer observed the vehicle run a red light and crash into something at the intersection of Colfax and Havana Street. The vehicle continued to speed west on Colfax.

The officer drove to Colfax and Havana, where he located a pedestrian who had been fatally struck by the fleeing vehicle. The pedestrian was in the crosswalk, crossing Colfax, when they were struck. The officer was not in pursuit of the fleeing vehicle at the time of the crash.

Witnesses notified officers there was a dark sedan with front-end damage pulled over at Colfax and Boston Street. Officers responded and located the Hyundai, which was unoccupied. Officers later contacted a man who was in the area. He confirmed to police he was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The driver has not yet been located.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867).

The pedestrian will be identified by the Adam’s County Coroner’s Office after notification of next of kin.

The crash marks the 6th traffic-related death this year in Aurora.
