If you are not familiar with the traditions of Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos, continue to read more about the holiday in the next tabs.
Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is the celebration of life and takes place from Wednesday, Nov. 1 to Thursday, Nov. 2. The celebration is filled with music and dancing while honoring the journey of life. It is believed that the dead return home to spend time with their loved ones during this time. Altars, or ofrendas, are created in their honor to prepare for their arrival. Typically, these altars include photos of loved ones, candles, marigolds and decorations.

La Catrina is influenced by Mexican artist Jos
é Guadalupe Posada's illustrations of Calavera Catrina, a female skeleton. Posada's illustrations of the calaveras, originally named "La Calavera Garbancera", were political satires of Mexican society during his time. Since his creations, they became a symbol for Día de los Muertos and have been inspirations for future artists, such as Diego Rivera.
