The Aurora Police Department is excited to partner with the Community College of Aurora (CCA) for a newly developed Cadet Pilot Program. The Cadet Program is an opportunity for students at the Community College of Aurora to earn an associate degree towards a career in law enforcement at no cost to the student.

This partnership allows students to enroll in classes full-time at CCA while taking core classes that focus on law enforcement related topics. The program is fully funded by a sponsorship loan through CCA.

After graduating with an associates degree, students in the Cadet Program will commit three years of employment to Aurora Police in a role that best fits their career goals. This could include a rewarding career as an officer or any other role available at APD.

The Aurora Police Department and Community College of Aurora aim to set students up for a successful future, while establishing a group of working professionals who are serious about serving the city of Aurora.

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be 17 years of age or older

• Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident

• Must not have more than 30 credit hours of prior college credit

• No felony convictions or Colorado State POST disqualifiers

• Must complete required program hours and community engagement opportunities:

  • 40 volunteer hours per year

  • 8 program hours per month

• Must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be enrolled full time, earning 15 credit hours per semester

The acceptance process into the program will be robust. Things you should expect when applying for this unique and competitive opportunity include a background and criminal history check and the need for academic and personal references.

As determined by the state of Colorado, Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), the following are automatic grounds for disqualification from the hiring process:

1. Conviction of, or deferred judgment for, a crime which is a felony under state or federal law; or military conviction by a court-martial that is comparable to a felony conviction.

2. Conviction of any crime or ordinance violation, which would bar the applicant from possessing a firearm or ammunition under Federal or Colorado law. (For Police Officer Applicants only.)

3. Conviction of, deferred judgement for, or combination of any misdemeanor causing disqualification under POST standard 24-31305. (For Police Officer Applicants only.)

4. Illegal distribution of any controlled substances or drugs, including steroids, in the last (3) years. Frequency of behavior, quantity of drugs involved, and type are considered at time of background.
