October 29 Fatal Apartment Fire on Galena St.
Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a multi-family structure fire at 1600 N. Galena St. on Thursday, October 29 after 11:45 p.m. The incident was upgraded to a second alarm fire in order to perform fire attack, search the building and rescue multiple residents who were trapped inside.
The 2-alarm fire response included six engine companies, four ladder companies, two battalion chiefs and more than six medic units.
In total, 13 patients were evaluated by paramedics and five were transported to local hospitals. Two of those transported had life threatening injuries. Aurora Fire Rescue later received notification that one of the patients had died.
The entire building was rendered uninhabitable and approximately 60 residents were displaced. The Red Cross was notified and worked to assist those needing shelter. The origin and cause of this fatal fire are under investigation.

This fire has been officially ruled as arson and the resulting fatality a homicide.
