A fire this evening caused damage to an apartment near S. Peoria St. and E. Archer Pl.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. callers reported to Aurora911 that an apartment building was on fire. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames and helped one person and one pet who needed assistance evacuating.

Crews from Aurora Fire Rescue were able to keep the fire from spreading to other units. Two people were evaluated by EMS professionals on scene but were not transported to the hospital. Sadly, one dog died as a result of the blaze. The residents of the affected unit will be displaced and the Red Cross has been contacted to provide comfort and support for those who cannot go home tonight.

The incident is under investigation and there were no early indications of a cause.
