At approximately 1:55PM Aurora Fire Rescue responded to the area near 2400 South and Victor Street for a report of an odor investigation. AFR found a multifamily residential structure emitting a strong odor of natural gas. AFR used specialized equipment and training to identify a buried 3” natural gas line that had ruptured and was leaking. The ruptured gas line was in the driveway between two units and under a slab of asphalt. Due to the levels of natural gas in the area and safety concerns, AFR evacuated the residents of 6 units. Local traffic was also temporarily shut down due to fire hazards. Residents that did not have a warm place to go were temporarily housed in Falk Medical Ambulances. EXCEL Energy was able to clamp the gas line and prevent any further gas leak. Residents were able to return home, and gas has been safely restored to the building via a different natural gas line. EXCEL will continue to work in the area repairing the ruptured line. Due to the response and hard work of AFR crews, AFR HAZMAT team, Falk Ambulances, and EXCEL Energy, no one was injured.
