A young victim succumbed to their injuries after a two-alarm fire in an apartment complex this morning. At approximately 1:30 a.m. today Aurora Fire Rescue crews were alerted to a residential structure fire at 15320 E. Evans Ave.
Soon after arriving, firefighters performed an initial search of the building, began fire suppression operations, and rescued multiple victims inside.
Nine people were injured and three of those patients were transported to local hospitals. Sadly, fire officials were notified later that a child who was transported to the hospital later died.
Aurora Fire Rescue and Aurora Police Department investigators are working together on this case. The investigation is active and ongoing and is expected to last into the coming days.
“Despite the courageous and professional efforts of our members, our community has suffered a tragic loss and the entire Aurora Fire Rescue family is deeply saddened by this incident,” said Aurora Fire Rescue Chief Fernando Gray, Sr. “We are committed to providing any and all assistance to those impacted and displaced by this fire, and especially to those who are grieving today. A complete and thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the origin and cause of the fire.”
Volunteers with The American Red Cross are providing comfort and support to more than thirty individuals who were displaced from the twelve units which were damaged. The identity of the child will be provided by the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office consistent with their policies on releasing victim identification.
