Aurora Fire Rescue today announced that registration is now open for this summer’s Camp Spark, a free three-day immersive fire skills training program for girls aged 11-19. Applications will be accepted until Friday, June 7.

Camp Spark is designed to ignite an interest in the fire service for young women. According to the National Fire Protection Association, approximately 9 percent of all firefighters in 2020 were women. Of that number which totaled approximately 89,600, roughly 17,200 women were career firefighters while the rest were in volunteer roles. Approximately 7 percent of AFR’s firefighters are women.

Now in its fifth year, three past participants who attended Camp Spark for three years are currently pursuing careers in the fire service. All participants receive opportunities to build leadership skills, character and confidence.

Beginning Friday, July 26 and ending on Sunday, July 28, the camp is held at the City of Aurora Public Safety Training Center and includes an overnight stay at the training center on Saturday night. The program includes workouts, motivational guest speakers, individual and team challenges, and various skills training, such as ladder raises, air packs, rescue and search, and hose pulls.

Interest will likely exceed this year’s capacity of 50 participants, so middle and high school girls are encouraged to apply now. Questions may be sent by email to [email protected] or by calling 303.326.8960.

Camp Spark was established and is organized by several female AFR firefighters. The program is largely funded through private donations from donors and the community. Donations to support the program may be made through the city’s Spirit of Aurora 501(c)(3).
