The city of Aurora’s Open Space and Natural Resources Division has made all-terrain wheelchairs available to ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy nature. The Action Trackchair® is an all-terrain wheelchair that allows those with mobility issues to enjoy trails and other nature adventures.
The track chairs can be reserved free of charge for use year-round at the Plains Conservation Center, 21901 E. Hampden Ave., and Star K Ranch, 16002 E. Smith Road. Track chairs are available only during center hours, and rentals are limited to two hours. Participants are asked to complete a questionnaire about their preferred dates at AuroraGov.org/TrackChairs. Please note that walk-up or drop-in users cannot be accommodated at this time.
There is no minimum weight requirement for an Action Trackchair®, but the maximum weight limit is 300 pounds. For those who require it, car seats or boosters can be secured into the track chair. It is also recommended to bring a water bottle, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks, a sun hat, an umbrella, rain gear or extra layers depending on the weather and, of course, a sense of adventure!
Aurora resident Melissa Chavez was able to use an Action Trackchair® with her son Anthony at Star K Ranch. She said, "It just opens the door to have fun as a family together; I'm just really grateful that Aurora thought of families like ours."
The city of Aurora’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department is taking an inclusive approach to encouraging active lifestyles and ensuring everyone has equal access to the wonders of nature in Aurora, including enabling the use of assistive technology in the city’s open space and park system.
