The Aurora Police Department Vehicle Impound Detail is responsible for storing all vehicles seized by Aurora Police Officers. Vehicles may be impounded for a variety of reasons to include abandoned vehicles, vehicles that contain or are evidence, and impounding for statutory reasons such as a non-drivable car after an accident, illegal license plates or the arrest of the driver.
Vehicles in Aurora can only be impounded by Aurora police officers and Parking Control Officers. If you think your car may have been impounded, call 303.326.8680. Be sure to have the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) available.
If you received a yellow postcard or a certified letter from the Impound Detail and you are no longer the owner of the vehicle, you can disregard the notice.
To have a vehicle released:
- A driver with a valid driver’s license is required
- The vehicle must be property registered and have valid insurance
- Vehicles without insurance or registration can be released on a tow away basis only
- The vehicle and property in the vehicle can only be released to the registered owner, the owner’s agent, or lien holder
- To give someone else permission to pick up property, a notarized letter from the registered owner specifying who has permission must be submitted to the Impound Detail

- A government issued picture identification card is required for all transactions
- Proof of ownership must be presented. Proof consists of the registration, temporary registration documents, or title with the owner’s name on the front of the title

The Aurora Police Department Vehicle Impound Detail and storage lot is located at 19900 E. Colfax Ave, about one mile east of North Tower Road on East Colfax Avenue at the M&M Towing yard.
Impound Hours: Monday - Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. - closed Sundays and city observed holidays.
