The city of Aurora is embarking on a journey to make the city a model of accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and needs the help of residents, businesses and visitors to identify areas in need of improvement. During the next two years, the city will be developing a plan to identify, evaluate and fund accessibility updates in infrastructure, services and programs.

Phase One of the identification and planning process is underway and is focused on public right-of-way infrastructure, such as sidewalks, curb ramps and other pedestrian facilities. Additional phases of the planning process will focus on the city’s emergency management operations, on the city’s parks and recreation programs and infrastructure, and on the city’s buildings, facilities and parking structures.

Residents, businesses and visitors are the best resource in identifying gaps in accessibility for individuals with disabilities who live, work and play in the Aurora, and are also key to helping the city prioritize improvements in programs, infrastructure and services.

There are a few ways for people to get involved. First, an online survey and mapping tool are available through Nov. 30 at EngageAurora.org/ADA. The survey is available in six languages. Next, a series of Phase 1 Town Hall meetings are scheduled to allow people to share feedback in person:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 29, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Aurora Municipal Center, Aurora Room, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway
  • Thursday, Nov. 7, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. (virtual meeting; find link at EngageAurora.org/ADA)
  • Wednesday, Nov. 13, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Aurora Municipal Center, Aurora Room, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway

Anyone in need of assistance in filling out a survey, or who would like to complete the survey over the phone as an alternative to filling out the online survey, can call 720.473.7587 or email [email protected]

Town Hall meeting dates for future phases of the Accessibility Plan will be shared at EngageAurora.org/ADA. Questions? Contact ADA Coordinator Karlyn K. Shorb at [email protected] or 303.326.8857.
