Alternatives Before Bringing Your Dog To The Shelter
Posted on 08/10/2021
During quarantine shelters saw record numbers of adoptions as people were excited to adopt a pet to keep them company while in isolation. Unfortunately, as people are heading back to work, some pet owners are overwhelmed with caring for their pet while trying to maintain their careers. As a result, shelters are beginning to see an increase in dog surrenders.
Surrendering a beloved pet is never an easy decision to make. However, there are some alternatives available that could benefit both you and your pet:
- Doggie Day Care - There are several doggie day care facilities throughout the metro area. This is a great option for people that work long hours. It can also provide peace of mind knowing that your dog is in good hands while you are at work. Doggie day cares will feed, walk and play with your dog. Some even have webcams so you can check in on your pet throughout the day. Another added benefit is that your dog will get plenty of attention while continuing to develop their socializing skills with new people and other dogs!
- Hire a Dog Walker - Instead of rushing home during your lunch break to let your dog out, hire a dog walker to accommodate your dog's needs. There are several apps and websites where you can book a trusted and qualified professional to assist you with your furry friend.
- Enrichment Items - Keep your dog's mind occupied throughout the day with toys, treat dispensers and puzzles. Its important to change it up and keep their mind mentally stimulated.
- Crate Training - Consider crating your dog. A dog's crate should always be associated as a positive safe space and never used as punishment. Crate training has been known to help with house training, reducing anxiety, and prevents unwanted behavior such as chewing on household items. There are several resources online that discuss the benefits of crate training.
- Seek a Professional Trainer - If your dog is developing behavior issues, it may be a good idea to seek help from a professional trainer. When selecting a trainer, ask about their credentials and/or experience and what methods they use for training. It is highly recommended to avoid trainers that use techniques that involve dominance or submission.
- Pet Food Bank - Many shelters have pet food banks available for people that are going through a financial hardship and need help providing their pets with food. If you need assistance, please contact your local shelter to check availability and to schedule a pickup.
Hopefully, these options will make it possible to keep your pet a part of your family. However, if you are still in need of surrendering, please bring your pet to your local shelter or humane society. Residents that live in Aurora, may bring their pets to the Aurora Animal Shelter, however, an appointment is required in advance.
