Road Construction Updates

Road Construction Updates
Posted on 11/14/2025

As the city of Aurora improves its infrastructure offerings to its current and future residents, demands for more infrastructure, improvements and repairs also grow. On any given work day, there can be as many as 100 active work zones within the city.

Traffic engineering staff make every effort to minimize the impact of these work zones to the traveling public. In addition to reviewing and approving the plans to ensure they are safe and compliant with all regulations, staff also work with contractors to seek alternatives to street closures and minimize the number of lane closures and their duration. Staff also try to keep conflicting work zones from overlapping in time or space. In most cases, these efforts are successful. However, on occasion, alternatives are not available and since we are dealing with the outdoor environment, even the best planned projects get delayed by weather, special events or unknown conditions, resulting in confusion and/or unplanned congestion.

Other Road Construction Work (weather delays may be expected for all work zones)

Please note: Although the city informs online mapping services about our road closures and designated detours/alternate routes, the routes they provide to the general traveling public are generally the shortest or quickest routes between two points. That results in drivers sometimes not following the city's designated detour/alternate routes.

56th and Hudson Road Closures and Project

(view map for aerial view of closure impacts and alternate routes)

Please note: Flood damage has restricted access to both 56th Avenue and Hudson Road. Heavy rainfall undermined the roadways and destroyed the road surface in some locations. The road closures are necessary to protect the traveling public while the project team works to reopen the roadways. Project information will continue to be posted on the project webpage as it becomes available.

I-70 Picadilly Interchange

Frequent traffic pattern changes are expected in the coming weeks as crews work toward opening the entire interchange to traffic. Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution traveling through the work zone, especially with winter weather conditions on the horizon.

Colfax detour in place through late November for eastbound I-70 access

Eastbound traffic on East Colfax Avenue that normally can merge directly onto eastbound Interstate 70 continues to be rerouted via a short detour through late November as part of this project.

Traffic is being diverted south to follow the new Picadilly Road, 13th Avenue, the old Picadilly Road and then back onto the I-70 Frontage Road. Drivers should turn north at E-470 to re-enter eastbound I-70. Expect delays and use alternate routes if possible.

A short stretch of the I-70 Frontage Road between the new Picadilly Road and old Picadilly Road also is closed. Westbound traffic on that frontage road will follow the same detour in reverse to connect with westbound Colfax.

Eastbound I-70
-From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, through Saturday, Nov. 22. there will be alternating right- and left-lane closures.
-Please be cautious: Lanes are shifted slightly towards the median. Also, be aware that trucks may be entering eastbound I-70 from the shoulders.

Westbound I-70
-From 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, through Saturday, Nov. 22, there will be alternating right- and left-lane closures.
-Please be cautious: Lanes are shifted slightly towards the median.

Picadilly Road south of Smith Road
Picadilly Road, between Smith Road and East 19th Avenue, will remain closed through fall 2025 as crews complete utility relocations, roadway removals and reconstruction. Currently, crews are moving into building the roadway.
-Traffic is detoured to Sicily Street. Parking on Sicily Street is not allowed during this closure.

Construction activities are site- and weather-dependent and subject to change.

Diverging Diamond Interchange Opening
The I-70 Picadilly Interchange Project is scheduled to open the new diverging diamond interchange to travelers as soon as Thanksgiving 2025, weather-permitting. Finishing work associated with temperature and weather-dependent activities may continue in early 2026. Continue following along on our project updates for more information.

ARTA I-70 Aerotropolis Parkway Interchange Project

The Aerotropolis Regional Transportation Authority and contract partner, Ames Construction, has begun construction of the I-70 Aerotropolis Parkway Interchange in Adams County.

Part of ARTA’s planned regional transportation infrastructure improvements across the district, the purpose of the project is to provide much-needed access to developments from Aurora and Adams County, and to improve connectivity to Denver International Airport and the adjacent area served by the Aerotropolis Regional Transportation Authority.

Work includes realigning the south portion of East Colfax Avenue/I-70 Frontage Road and adding drainage ponds, building on and off ramps and a new bridge spanning I-70, and constructing roundabouts on the north and south ends of the interchange that will eventually tie into future roadways.

As of Nov. 13, the Aerotropolis Regional Transportation Authority, the Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner, Ames Construction, have reopened the East Colfax Avenue/I-70 Frontage Road from Gun Club Road to Powhaton Road ahead of schedule. The road was closed on Nov. 4 for realignment work as part of the I-70 Aerotropolis Parkway Interchange infrastructure improvement project that began in August.

Traffic will now be routed onto the newly realigned roadway just south of the original location. A single lane closure can be expected on the new roadway during working hours until the middle of next week while crews install new shoulder material. Flaggers will be present during these lane closures to manage alternating traffic flows, with short delays expected.

The project team appreciates the cooperation of local agencies, area residents and the traveling public during the closure.

Visit the ARTA website for schedule and working hours and ongoing traffic impacts. For questions, call the project hotline at 720.388.2660 or email [email protected].

East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit

Aurora, in partnership with the city and county of Denver, RTD, CDOT and DRCOG, is celebrating the ongoing construction of the East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Construction is not expected to reach Aurora until early 2026.

Watch the Colfax BRT series, Col-FAQS: On the Street.

BRT systems are designed to move more people with more safety, efficiency and reliability. Buses will run down dedicated center transit lanes in Denver and in mixed flow through Aurora, significantly reducing travel times within the project’s boundaries—from Union Station in Denver to RTD’s R-Line Station at I-225 in Aurora.

More information—including a small business toolkit with resources for how to thrive during construction—is available at DenverGov.org/ColfaxBRT. Business owners also may take a self-assessment to consider how your business might be impacted by construction and what you may need to do to prepare. Additional resources are available from the Aurora South Metro Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at AuroraGov.org/SBDC.
