Let's Talk about Poinsettias and Pets.

PoinsettiasPoinsettias, with their vibrant winter blooms, are a beloved plant during the holiday season. Before bringing such a plant into your home this holiday season, you should be aware that poinsettias can be mildly toxic to both cats and dogs. Thankfully, it is extremely rare that the plant can be lethal to your pets. The milky white sap found in poinsettias is similar to a chemical found in detergents. When ingested the most common symptoms include vomiting, drooling, diarrhea, reduce appetite and lethargy. Skin irritation can also occur if the sap makes contact with their skin. Since the toxicity level is low, poinsettias can be safely displayed in your home with caution and under supervision.

If you suspect your pet has ingested a poinsettia leaf or steam and is showing symptoms, it is recommended to remove access to their food and water for a few hours to allow the vomiting to subside. After a few hours give them small amounts of food and water for the remainder of the day. If your pet shows no signs of improvement within a few hours contact your veterinarian.
