Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT)

The Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) program for juvenile offenders focuses on cognitive perceptions and strives to enable juveniles to transition from making superficial, two-dimensional decisions to becoming three-dimensional thinkers who can demonstrate a greater depth and understanding of reality. The MRT program has 16 steps with 12 of these steps typically completed in 30 group sessions. Juveniles must complete homework for each group prior to coming to a session. In group sessions, juveniles present their homework, and based on objective criteria, the facilitator will either pass the juvenile onto the next step or require the juvenile to redo the homework. All MRT group sessions are open-ended meaning new juvenile participants can enter an ongoing group session at any time. Court ordered Community Service is a requirement for the MRT program.

The MRT curriculum is as follows:
Step 1:             Honesty
Step 2:             Trust
Step 3:             Acceptance
Step 4:             Awareness
Step 5:             Healing damaged relationships
Step 6:             Helping others
Step 7:             Long term goals
Step 8:             Short term goals
Step 9:             Commitment to change
Step 10:           Maintain positive change
