UPDATE: Arrests Made: Aurora Major Crime Unit Investigating Fatal Shooting in West Aurora
(Jan. 10, 2025) – The Aurora Police Department Major Crime Homicide Unit announced Friday it has arrested three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl that occurred earlier this week at an apartment complex in west Aurora.
On Wednesday, the Denver Police Department Narcotics Unit arrested April Chevon Collingwood, 44, of Aurora, on charges of complicity to commit second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and attempted aggravated robbery.
Late Thursday, the Aurora Police Department fugitive unit, with the assistance of the Denver police Metro SWAT Team, arrested a second suspect, Cooper Miller, 35, of Aurora, on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and attempted aggravated robbery.
This morning, Aurora police patrol officers, the fugitive unit and SWAT Team arrested a third suspect, David Gunion, 51, of Aurora. He also faces charges of second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and attempted aggravated robbery.
There are no outstanding suspects in the investigation.
The charges stem from about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, when Aurora patrol officers responded to a report of a home invasion and shooting at an apartment in the 10600 block of East Jewell Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 16-year-old girl with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim later died after being taken to a local hospital.
The preliminary investigation determined two armed men entered the apartment, which was occupied by multiple residents. There was a struggle and multiple shots were fired. One of the shots struck the victim, fatally wounding her.
During the ongoing investigation, homicide detectives developed information that Miller and Gunion were the two armed suspects who entered the apartment at the time of the fatal shooting. Detectives also obtained evidence of Collingwood’s involvement, which included planning and recruiting Miller and Gunion to carry out the crime.
Collingwood appeared Thursday in Arapahoe District Court for an advisement hearing. She is being held on $100,000 bond.
Formal charges against Miller and Gunion will be filed by the Arapahoe District Attorney’s Office.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867). Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
