Posted on 11/25/2024

(Nov. 25, 2024) – The Aurora Police Department published Monday its Use of Force Report for Year 2023.

The report provides detailed summaries of the department’s use of force policies, training, and its investigative, review and adjudication processes for use of force events. The report also provides data about use of force statistics compared to 2021 and 2022, as well as information about officers and subjects involved in use of force events.

“We recognize as an agency the importance of capturing and analyzing use of force information in the spirit of continuous improvement and enhancing public safety services for our residents,” said Deputy Chief Chris Juul. “Following the launch of the Online Transparency & Accountability Portal in January, publishing this annual report is the logical next step in our commitment to transparency and broader information sharing with our community.”

Some of the noteworthy stats from the report include:

• There were four lethal use of force events in 2023, down from 13 in 2022 and eight in 2021.
• Low-level uses of force accounted for more than 80% of the total in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
• The proportion of arrests involving a use of force remained consistent in each reporting year, accounting for 12.6% of arrests in 2021, 10.4% in 2022 and 11.2% in 2023.
• The number of use of force events compared to total calls for service remained consistent, accounting for .1% of all 911 calls in 2021, .2% in 2022 and .3% in 2023.

The full report is published to the Aurora Police Department website under the “Public Reports & Crime Data” tab.
