Aurora Fire Rescue (AFR) responded to reports of an electrical problem at a two-story single-family home in the 400 block of South Uvalda Street. The incident occurred at approximately 6:26 p.m., with Engine Four arriving on scene as the first unit. Upon entry, crews encountered light smoke within the residence.
Ladder Eight quickly initiated an investigation, pulling down ceiling drywall to assess the situation further. The crew discovered active fire in the attic space. Engine Four promptly deployed an attack line to contain and extinguish the blaze, while Ladder Eight conducted a thorough search to identify fire extension and ensure there were no trapped occupants. Fortunately, all residents safely evacuated before AFR’s arrival. Two adults and two dogs were displaced as a result of the fire, but no injuries were reported. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the displaced residents in arranging temporary accommodations.
Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental electrical, and the origin was the attic.
As the colder months approach and the use of home heating systems increases, AFR urges residents to follow these essential electrical safety tips to help prevent similar incidents:
- Always plug major appliances — such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, and dryers — directly into a wall outlet.
- Avoid using extension cords or power strips with these appliances.
Do not overload outlets.
- Overloading can lead to overheating and pose a fire hazard.
Ensure plugs are fully inserted into sockets.
- Loose connections can generate heat and increase the risk of fire.
- Never force a 3-prong cord into a 2-slot outlet. This compromises grounding, which is crucial for safety.
- Install tamper-resistant electrical outlets if you have young children to prevent accidental shocks.
- Replace wall outlets if plugs do not fit snugly, as loose outlets can lead to arcing and increase fire risk.
AFR reminds residents that proactive steps and routine safety checks are key to ensuring a safe home environment.
