Car towed out of pond

Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a call at approximately 1:30 pm with reports of a car sinking into West Toll Gate Creek near South Salida Way and East Vassar Place.

The reports did not indicate whether someone may have drowned as a result. On AFR's arrival, bystanders stated they saw individuals pushing the vehicle into the lake and driving away in another car.

AFR's Heavy Rescue donned water rescue suits and entered the pond, reaching the car and beginning a search for victims. The vehicle was a black four-door Volkswagen SUV submerged to the roof.

South Metro's Dive Team provided mutual aid by completing a thorough underwater search of the car and the lake itself. The dive team confirmed that no victims were found. Aurora Police confirmed the vehicle was stolen and are investigating the issue.

AFR would like to remind our community about safety tips to prevent drownings:

  • Learn to swim

  • Use a buddy system

  • Always supervise children

  • Avoid alcohol use

  • Wear a life jacket

  • Use medications as perscribed and follow all precautions noted
