(Oct. 3, 2024) – Aurora Police Department officers were involved in an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon responding to a report of a fight in a parking lot in northwest Aurora.
Just before 2 p.m., a community member called Aurora911 to report a fight between two men in the 11900 block of East 16th Avenue. While officers were responding to the scene, a second community member also called to report the fight and told dispatchers one of the men was armed with an assault-style rifle.
When officers arrived, they confronted the armed man and gave him multiple commands to drop his weapon. The man didn’t comply with the officer’s orders and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
The armed suspect was struck by gunfire. Officers immediately performed lifesaving actions on the suspect until medical responders arrived at the scene. The suspect was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, where he died shortly after his arrival. The suspect will be identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
Two Aurora police officers were involved in the initial contact. One officer fired at the suspect. No officers were injured in the shooting.
The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene and is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is active and ongoing. The involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with department policy. The Aurora Police Department is conducting an administrative review of the incident, which will run parallel to the Critical Incident Response Team’s investigation.
