Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a working structure fire at a two-story single-family home near 1600 South Pitkin Street at approximately 9:10 pm. Engine 7 was the first unit to arrive, and found smoke coming from the front door. Fire crews quickly connected to nearby fire hydrants, deployed hose lines, and extinguished the flames.

Once the fire was extinguished, the fire crews used high-powered fans to remove the smoke and search for hotspots. Fire investigators determined that the fire was accidental, originating in the kitchen. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the home has been returned to its occupants.

To help prevent cooking fires:

  • Turn off the burner if you leave the kitchen, even briefly.
  • Stay attentive to what you’re cooking.
  • Avoid excessive heat and turn off the burner if you see smoke or grease start to boil.
  • Keep a working fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Install smoke alarms in every room of the house.

By following these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of kitchen fires.
