Aurora Fire Rescue responded to a natural gas leak in the area of East Louisiana Parkway and South Algonquian Street at approximately 10:00 am. Upon arrival, AFR found construction crews digging holes for fence posts that struck a natural gas line. AFR immediately evacuated and secured the area. Once AFR's hazardous materials team arrived, they promptly clamped the gas line shut, further ensuring the safety of the community. Excel Energy was dispatched, and they are working to restore services. No injuries have been reported, construction has resumed, and community members have returned to their homes.
AFR would like to remind homeowners of their crucial role in preventing gas leaks. Always remember to call 811 before you dig. This simple step can prevent potentially dangerous situations. Natural gas is colorless and odorless; your natural gas provider adds a safe, non-toxic odorant called Mercaptan to the gas. This is so you can quickly know natural gas is in the air. Mercaptan has a distinctive smell, similar to sulfur or rotten eggs.
You may also be able to identify natural gas by sight or sound. If you hear a hissing or roaring sound or bubbling water, a natural gas leak may be the cause.
A gas leak detector can give you peace of mind and protect you and your neighbors by sounding an alarm. For more information, visit Utility Locates - City of Aurora (auroragov.org)
