News Release- Structure fire at five-story multi-family unit near the 1600 block of Havana.

First arriving fire crews fight heavy smoke and fire conditions coming from 3rd floor apartment.

At approximately 0003 on October 1, 2023, Aurora Fire was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at a 5 story multi-family residence in the 1600 block of Havana Street.

The first arriving crews found a 3rd floor apartment with heavy smoke and fire and began what was a complex fireground operation. Concurrently, fire crews gained a water supply from a hydrant, stretched multiple hose lines to combat the fire, conducted thorough searches of multiple floors, searching for missing people and pets, and ensuring the safety of all occupants. Additionally, utilities were promptly secured, and Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) operations were established.

A rescue stairwell was set up to facilitate safe evacuation. Several residents chose to shelter in place, following the guidance of firefighters. Through dedicated efforts, the fire was successfully brought under control and is under investigation to find the origin and cause of the fire.

Two residents were treated medically on-scene and refused transport to an area hospital. The command staff on-scene was notified by building management that the apartment effected by fire damage, was vacant.

In closing, high-rise fires pose challenges due to limited access, height, and potential evacuation issues. These challenges demand teamwork, discipline, and coordination by firefighters on-scene for an effective firefighting operation. Through the efforts of the firefighters tonight, thankfully no one was seriously injured.

No further information expected.Top of Form
