The city of Aurora’s new Southeast Recreation Center has earned a regional award in an annual contest to discover the best U.S. construction projects.
ENR Mountain States, a trade publication providing news, analysis, commentary, and data to construction industry professionals in Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the Dakotas, named the recreation center a 2023 Best Project in the Sports/Entertainment category for Colorado, Wyoming and the Dakotas.
The 77,000-square-foot Southeast Recreation Center and Fieldhouse, 25400 E. Alexander Drive, opened in January. The city contracted with architectural firm Populous to design the facility after extensive public input, and with Saunders Construction to build the $41.9 million center, which was funded with city retail marijuana tax revenues.
It features the city’s first indoor fieldhouse, breathtaking views of the Colorado mountains, an integrated public art installation, a natatorium, an elevated track, a multiuse gymnasium, and other amenities.

In the Best Projects competition, a panel of judges from all areas of the industry reviewed about 100 entries in a variety of categories, examining factors such as safety, innovation, craft quality, and community or industry benefit. One Best Project was selected in each category, along with an Award of Merit, if warranted. For more information, visit ENR.com/MountainStates.
