(July 17, 2023) – The Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating after a man and a woman died in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning. This crash also left one adult woman in the hospital with serious injuries.

At 3:30 a.m., officers responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of Interstate 225 and East 6th Avenue. Investigations revealed that a 2019 grey Chevrolet Traverse was traveling northbound on I-225 when it lost control near E. Ellsworth Avenue. The vehicle struck a barrier in the center median of the roadway and rolled with three occupants inside. Two of the individuals, an adult male and an adult female, were thrown from the vehicle and tragically pronounced deceased. The third occupant, a woman, remains in serious condition at the hospital.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, though speed and lack of seatbelt use are believed to be a factor. The Arapahoe County Coroner's officer is responsible for identification and determining cause of death.

I-225 was closed northbound from Alameda Pkwy to 6th Avenue for nearly five hours as crews assessed the scene.

If you witnessed this crash, or have dash-camera footage, and have not yet spoken to police, please reach out to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867).

The crash marks the 36th and 37th traffic-related fatalities this year in Aurora.
