Aurora Police Investigating Fatal Pickup vs. Motorcycle Crash
(June 15, 2023) – The Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating a deadly vehicle versus motorcycle crash that occurred Wednesday in Northeast Aurora.
Patrol officers responded at 3:56 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a crash on Tower Road at Interstate 70. A 31-year-old Aurora man was riding a 2012 Yamaha motorcycle north on Tower when he was struck by a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup. The 58-year-old driver of the pickup was driving south on Tower and turning onto eastbound I-70 at the time of the collision.
The rider was wearing a helmet and a riding jacket. He sustained serious injuries in the crash and was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died.
The rider’s name will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
Aurora traffic investigators responded and determined the rider was following a semi-truck that also was driving north on Tower Road. After the semi cleared the intersection, the driver of the pickup turned left toward the eastbound I-70 onramp, striking the motorcycle in the intersection.
Witnesses told police neither vehicle appeared to be speeding at the time of the collision. Investigators think the pickup driver didn’t see the motorcycle behind the semi, and neither the driver nor the rider could stop in time to avoid the collision. Drugs and alcohol are not being considered as contributing factors to the crash.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867).
The crash marks the 31st traffic-related death this year in Aurora.
