UPDATE: Body-Camera Footage Released: Aurora Police Officer Involved in Shooting Trying to Arrest Robbery Suspect
(June 9, 2023) - This afternoon, Chief Art Acevedo held a press conference to provide updates on the officer-involved shooting investigation and to release body-worn camera footage.
The release of the body-camera videos came after the 72-hour waiting period required by Colorado state law.

The 18th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team's investigation into the shooting remains active. The Gang/Robbery Investigation Team (GRIT) investigation into the store robbery and the administrative review by APD's Internal Affairs Bureau are ongoing. No further updates are expected until all investigations into this incident are completed.

(June 6, 2023) - This afternoon, Chief Art Acevedo met with counsel and family representatives for Jor’Dell Richardson to review body-worn camera footage of the officer involved shooting that occurred June 1, 2023.
C.R.S. 24-31-902 requires the department to wait 72-hours to publicly release body-worn camera footage after providing the information to the family. More information about this legislation can be found on page 554 here: https://leg.colorado.gov/sites/default/files/images/olls/crs2021-title-24.pdf
Accordingly, Chief Acevedo plans to hold a press conference this coming Friday afternoon. The exact details will be sent out later this week.

(June 1, 2023) - An Aurora Police Officer was involved in a shooting Thursday afternoon while trying to arrest an armed robbery suspect.
The incident began about 4:20 p.m. Thursday, when an Aurora police gang sergeant on routine patrol noticed several teenagers wearing medical masks and hooded sweatshirts approaching a convenience store near East Eighth Avenue and North Dayton Street. The sergeant radioed for additional gang officers to respond to the scene to investigate the suspicious activity.
Moments later, the teenagers ran from the store having robbed it of several vape canisters. The subsequent investigation revealed at least one of the teenagers threatened the clerk with a firearm.
Responding officers attempted to stop the suspects and take them into custody. Two ran from officers and were taken into custody without incident. Several more sped away in stolen Kia Sedona minivan featuring license plate CNS P11. The vehicle and suspects are still outstanding.
A third suspect who tried to run was contacted by officers and was found to be armed with a firearm. During a struggle to take him into custody, one officer fired their weapon.
Officers immediately began performing CPR and other life-saving actions until emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene. The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he died from his wounds.
The preliminary investigation has revealed the suspect who died in the shooting is a minor. He has not yet been positively identified.
The 18th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting. The Aurora Police Department's Gang and Robbery Investigations Team is investigating the armed robbery. APD's Direct Action Response Team and SWAT Team are actively searching for the outstanding suspects.
The officer involved in the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with agency policy. An Internal Affairs Bureau investigation also is underway and will run in concert with the criminal investigations.
