Adoptions

We understand the fun, excitement and joy of adopting a new pet. The Aurora Animal Shelter is happy to be a part of that experience. If you want to adopt, adopters are strongly encouraged to visit the shelter.

All available animals can be viewed online (using the links above) or in person. Our website updates hourly and is the best way to check if the animal you are interested in is still available for adoption! Please note that our kennels are not available for walk-throughs. However, all available animals are posted on our Adoption Wall and can still be met in person!

Attention cat lovers: We utilize several PetSmart and Petco stores in the metro area. If you see a cat on the website, there is a chance it could be in one of these locations. Click on the desired cat's photo, and the location will be noted in the cat's information. If you need assistance locating where an animal is housed, please call us; we will gladly help you.

Attention dog lovers: Here are a few things to consider when adopting a new dog.

Adoption requirements and process

• You must be at least 18 years of age to adopt with photo ID

• Adoptions are based on a first-come-first-serve basis. We do not offer holds for interested adopters or have a waiting list for specific breeds.

• Before visiting, call the shelter to learn additional information about the animal you are interested in adopting.

• We require all family members to be present for most adoptable dogs, including children and your current dog(s), if any. Dogs must remain leashed at all times. If your dog is on a flexi leash, we ask that it remain locked and no longer than 6 feet.

• Adoption visits end an hour before close (or earlier depending on weather/light conditions) to ensure you have plenty of time to meet the pet and complete the adoption process. 

• If the visit goes well and you are interested in adopting, we require a valid photo ID to begin the adoption process.

• The adoption process generally takes 20 minutes for us to go over the adoption contract with you.

• The adoption fees are collected by cash, check or card at the end of our adoption process.

Kitten Adoption Special

2 Kitten Special - Because Two Is Better Than One

Adopt any two kittens under the age of 6 months for $200.00.

When it comes to kittens, it is usually best to adopt them in pairs unless you have another young cat in the home. Kittens are known to be mischievously rambunctious and need a feline companion that can match their energy level.

Discounts

• Senior Discount - A 50% discount on regular adoption fees is available to residents age 65 and older (proof of age is required).

• Military Discount - A 50% discount on regular adoption fees is available for active and retired military (proof of service is required).
