Aurora Council Members Marsha Berzins, Curtis Gardner and Angela Lawson have received appointments to National League of Cities (NLC) federal advocacy committees for 2021.

Berzins, who represents Aurora’s Ward III, has been reappointed to the NLC Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. The committee is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving crime prevention, corrections, substance abuse, municipal fire policy, juvenile justice, disaster preparedness and relief, homeland security, domestic terrorism, court systems and gun control. Berzins has also been named to the NLC’s Large Cities Council and Military Communities Council.

Gardner, who is an at-large council member, has been appointed to the NLC Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations Committee. The committee is responsible for developing policy positions and leading NLC’s advocacy on issues involving intergovernmental relations (including Federalism and unfunded mandates), Census, municipal pensions, municipal bonds and capital finance, tax reform, antitrust issues, civil rights and labor relations.

Lawson, who is an at-large council member, has been reappointed to the NLC’s Transportation and Infrastructure Services Committee. The committee is responsible for leading NLC’s policy development and advocacy on transportation connectivity, including federal funding, safety and innovation in all modes of transportation.

As committee members, Berzins, Gardner and Lawson provide a voice for Aurora’s priorities at a national level and help NLC advocate on behalf of America’s cities and towns before Congress, with the administration and at home.

The National League of Cities, based in Washington, D.C., serves as a resource and advocate for U.S. cities, towns and villages, representing more than 200 million people. For more information on NLC’s committees, go to NLC.org/advocacy/committees.
