SUMMONS AND COMPLAINTS (TICKET)

The Aurora Municipal Court presides over violations of the Aurora Municipal Code. These matters include traffic summons and complaints (both traffic offenses and traffic infractions), parks and open space offenses, criminal offenses, neighborhood code compliance offenses, overweight commercial truck offenses, animal services violations, and fire department related offenses.

Other summonses issued by the Aurora Police Department for alleged violations of state statues are heard by either Adams County Court in Brighton, Arapahoe Combined Court in Centennial or Douglas Combined Court in Castle Rock.

If you have received a Summons and Complaint (ticket) from the Aurora Police Department, read the front and back of your ticket carefully to determine the jurisdiction for your court appearance.

How do I know the summons and complaint I received is for Aurora Municipal Court?

An Aurora Municipal Court summons and complaint will begin with one of the following prefixes:

  • E tickets: Hand written traffic summons and complaint, full page, gold in color with additional information on the back of your copy. An E ticket can also be a traffic summons and complaint issued electronically.
  • Y tickets: Traffic summons and complaint issued electronically on a long narrow white in color print out.
  • BD tickets: Building Housing and Community Services Department summons and complaint, full page, white in color.
  • F tickets: Fire Department summons and complaint, full page, gold in color.
  • J tickets: Hand written criminal summons and complaint, full page, gold in color with additional information on the back of your copy.
  • K tickets: Animal Services Division summons and complaint, full page, gold in color.
  • P tickets: Parks and Open Space summons and complaint, full page, gold in color.
  • S tickets: Overweight commercial truck summons and complaint, full page, gold in color.
  • ST tickets: Sales Tax and Licensing summons and complaint, full page, gold in color.
  • U tickets: University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center Police Department summons and complaint, full page, gold in color.
  • Z tickets: Housing and Community Services Department summons and complaint, full page, white in color.

What information is on the summons and complaint?

  • The infraction(s) or offense(s) you are alleged to have committed.
  • The date, time and location of the alleged infractions(s) or offense(s).
  • The date and time you are required to appear in court (including the court’s address).

Is my court appearance a mandatory court appearance?

Some tickets require a Mandatory Court appearance. This information will be listed on the summons and complaint along with the date, time and location of where you are required to appear in court.

What is the process for a juvenile court appearance?

All juvenile summons and complaints require a mandatory court appearance. If you are under the age of eighteen (18), you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Information regarding juveniles cannot be provided over the telephone or by email. You must appear in person to get information.

What are the possible penalty assessments for a ticket?

Traffic infractions in Aurora Municipal Code are punishable by a fine of not more than $2,650 and points assessed against the person’s driver’s license. Traffic infractions are not criminal offenses. People charged with a traffic infraction only have a right to a bench trial (trial by judge).

If the traffic charge relates to a non-criminal traffic infraction and the person fails to appear in court as directed by the summons and complaint, a “default judgment” will enter including a fine and costs as well as the full points charged in the summons. An arrest warrant will not issue for a failure to appear on a traffic infraction. However, an arrest warrant will issue if the person was charged with any criminal traffic offense(s) on the summons and complaint.

How can I obtain discovery for an Aurora Municipal Court summons?

Discovery (police report, officer’s notes, etc.) requests for traffic or criminal cases must be made to the Aurora City Attorney’s Office – Criminal Justice Division by calling 303.739.7810.

What documentation is required if I have a No Proof Of Insurance charge?

Insurance-related offenses [ACC 134-8 (a), (b) or (c)]: In order to have the court consider dismissal of an insurance charge, the court must be able to confirm you were an insured driver of the specified vehicle on the date and time of the violation.

Consistent with the Model Traffic Code as adopted by the city of Aurora, the Aurora Municipal Court will not accept an Insurance ID card after a No Proof of Insurance ticket has been issued.

The court REQUIRES a letter from your Insurance Agent/Company providing all of the following information:

  • Letter must be on company letterhead
  • Letter must be dated
  • Policy Number
  • Defendant’s name
  • Year, Make and Model of vehicle
  • Statement of coverage for the defendant driving the specified vehicle on the DATE AND TIME of the violation
