Structure Fire

Aurora Fire Rescue responded to the 900 North Emporia Street area at approximately 8:07 am on a reported fire. The first arriving fire crews found a single-story duplex with one unit that was on fire. Engine 1 deployed attack hose lines while Engine 2 established a water supply by connecting to a fire hydrant. Ladder crews searched the building for people and pets and assisted with ventilating toxic smoke out of the home.

AFR's hard work and swift actions quickly brought the fire under control, and no one was injured. The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental, and its origin was in the kitchen. One family was displaced due to the fire damage. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist with temporary housing. No further updates are expected.

Kitchen Fire Safety Tips:

  • If you leave the kitchen, turn the burner off.
  • Make sure cooking is supervised.
  • Watch what you're cooking. Fires often start when the heat is too high.
  • Turn off the burner immediately if you see smoke or grease begin to boil.
  • Turn handles toward the back of the stove to avoid bumps or spills.
  • If a pan catches fire, use the lid or baking sheet to cover it and extinguish the flames.

Stay safe and cook responsibly!
