(October 26)  Two Aurora men have been arrested in connection with the fatal hit and run crash that killed a man and his two dogs in August.

Stephen Carter, 22, and Cullin Barnes, 45, were both arrested on suspicion of Attempting to Influence a Public Servant. These charges relate to both men making false statements to investigators during the fatal hit and run investigation.

Investigators have been continuously working to positively identify those involved in this tragic crash that killed a man and his two dogs in the early morning hours on August 5, 2022. Investigators determined that Cullin, the vehicle's owner, was inside of the vehicle at the time of the crash but denies being the driver. Detectives are still waiting for other forensic evidence to determine who was actually driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

In coordination with Metro Denver Crime Stoppers and the Aurora Reward Fund, the reward for information is still at $10,000. We are asking anyone with information about this crash to please come forward with details. You can remain anonymous by using Metro Denver Crime Stoppers and still be eligible for the reward.

Information previously released

(August 5) The suspect is on the run after hitting and killing a pedestrian and two dogs on South Reservoir Road.

On August 5, 2022 at about 2:30 a.m., Aurora911 received reports of a single vehicle crash near the intersection of South Reservoir Road and East Mansfield Avenue. Aurora Fire Rescue and Aurora Police responded and discovered a man and two dogs lying in the grass nearby, as well as a crashed vehicle in the center of South Reservoir Road. A 41-year-old man was pronounced deceased on scene and both dogs were also killed.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a Toyota Sequoia was traveling southbound on South Reservoir Road, just south of East Mansfield Avenue. The Toyota left the roadway, striking the pedestrian and two dogs on the sidewalk on the west side of Reservoir, killing all three of them. A bus stop, numerous signs and an electrical box were also struck in this crash. The Sequoia came to rest after driving over the center median. The driver of the Sequoia, an unknown man, left the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle behind, prior to officers’ arrival.

Southbound Reservoir was closed for multiple hours so the Traffic Investigators could collect evidence, photograph the scene, and take necessary measurements. This investigation is ongoing and will determine the speed of the vehicle prior to the crash, as well as any other contributing factors.

The identification of the deceased will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office once next of kin has been notified and they have been positively identified.

If you have any information on the identity of the suspect, witnessed this crash or have dash-camera footage of the crash, and have not yet spoken to investigators, please contact the Aurora Police Traffic Section or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers. By using Crime Stoppers, tipsters can remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward of up-to $2,000.

(October 23) One woman was arrested Saturday evening after leaving the scene of a crash involving a motorcycle near South Peoria Street and East Warren Place.

Valerie Zamora, 50, of Aurora was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

On October 22, 2022 at about 4:45 p.m., Aurora Police Officers responded to South Peoria Street near the intersection of East Warren Place on reports of a serious motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle. Officers discovered two people, a man and a woman, lying in the roadway, both suffering from life-threatening injuries. They were transported to the hospital but sadly the woman did not survive. The man remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators learned that the man and woman were both on a Honda Motorcycle going southbound on South Peoria Street. A Subaru Outback was exiting the parking lot of a gas station at the intersection, going westbound across all lanes of traffic on South Peoria Street, when the Honda Motorcycle struck the rear of the Subaru. The motorcycle then struck a stationary Toyota SUV. Immediately following the crash, the Subaru left the scene without stopping or providing aid.

Officers obtained information about that Subaru and were able to locate the vehicle unoccupied a short distance away. Through their investigation, they then located the driver of the Subaru, Valerie Zamora, and placed her into custody.

The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased victim once she has been positively identified and next of kin notified.

The intersection was closed for a few hours so Traffic Investigators could collect evidence, photographs, and measurements. This investigation is ongoing, but alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.

Please contact the Aurora Police Traffic Section if you witnessed this crash or have dash-camera footage of the crash and have not yet spoken to investigators, by reaching out to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries. She died the following day at the hospital. The Aurora Police Department wasn’t notified about the fatality until Wednesday.

The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and cooperated with the initial investigation of the crash. Intoxication is not suspected as a contributing factor. The crash remains under investigation.
