AURORA: SAFEST LARGE CITY IN COLORADO FOR 2016

For the fourth consecutive year the Aurora Police Department is proud to announce that Aurora is the safest large city in Colorado.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently released its annual “Crime in the United States” data for 2016. The data indicates that Aurora continues to be the safest large city in the State of Colorado and the 25th overall safest large city in the United States. Aurora was compared to 82 major cities in the United States with a population of 250,000 or more residents.  In 2015, this list of cities compared Aurora to 79 major cities with a population of 250,000 or more residents.

Chief of Police Nicholas Metz stated, “Our ranking as the safest large city in Colorado, and as one of the safest major cities in the country would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of every member of the Aurora Police Department. Our success in keeping Aurora safe would not be possible without the partnerships we have established with the members of the community we serve, and by working closely and collaboratively with the Mayor and Councilmembers of the City of Aurora.  By maintaining a solid working partnership with the members of our community, City leadership, and local, state and federal law enforcement partners we will continue to make Aurora safer every day.”

The FBI’s Crime in the United States report relies on data collected and reported to them by participating agencies and adheres to the established Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) standards. The UCR aims to create consistency in reporting for all participating agencies nationwide. These are the only crimes reported nationally to the FBI and the only measures to compare one city’s crime trends to another. For reporting purposes, the seven major crimes are categorized into two groups: Violent Crime (murder, forcible sex assault [rape], aggravated assault, robbery) and Property Crime (burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft).
