On March 4, 2019, at 8:44 a.m., Aurora Police Officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of North Dallas Street in response to an unknown male who called 911 reporting there were hostages inside of an apartment. The male advised parties had been injured by someone with a machete.
Upon officers arrival they knocked on the apartment door announcing themselves. An adult female answered the door, and was escorted out of the residence for safety. Officers made additional announcements ordering anyone else inside of the apartment to come out. An adult black male immediately appeared, and was actively threatening officers with a machete despite officer’s commands to drop the machete. One officer deployed their less-lethal Taser, and another officer discharged their weapon striking the armed male subject stopping the threat. Officers immediately rendered First Aid to the male who was then transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The identity of the male will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office pending positive identification, and notification of his next-of-kin. No one else was injured as a result of this incident to include the responding officers.
All responding officers were equipped with Body Worn Cameras, and were activated as required throughout this incident. The involved officer has worked for the Aurora Police Department for nearly two years, and has not been in any prior officer-involved shootings. The officer will be placed on administrative leave per Aurora Police Department policy.
The incident is being investigated by members of the Aurora Police Department, Denver Police Department and the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in accordance with Senate Bill 15-219. Once this investigation is complete it will be presented to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for criminal culpability review. We are requesting all members of the public who were a witness to the officer-involved shooting to contact Agent Jamie Krieger at 303.739.6113.
At the request of the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, we cannot provide any additional details at this time in order to protect the integrity of the investigation, and all who are involved. All further media inquiries should be directed to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office Public Information Officer Sue Lindsay.

On January 28th, 2019, at 7:15 AM, an Aurora Police Officer arrived at the intersection of South Sable Blvd and East Exposition Avenue where an RTD R-Line Light Rail Train had just derailed. The train had been south on Sable Blvd and making the turn to west on Exposition Ave when it jumped the track. One person was ejected from the train and sustained a serious injury. A few other passengers on the train reported minor injuries and were also transported to a local hospital.
The Aurora Police Traffic Unit is investigating this incident with the cooperation of RTD. Speed and weather conditions, due to the heavy snowfall, are factors being considered.
The intersection of Sable and Exposition is still closed at this time and may be for a couple more hours.

On February 9th, 2019, at about 6:40 AM, Aurora Police Officers responded to a single vehicle crash in the area of South Chambers Road and East Hampden Avenue. When they arrived, they determined that a 2018 Nissan Sentra was traveling north on South Chambers Road at a high rate of speed. As the Sentra crossed over East Hampden Avenue, it started to lose control and left the roadway. It struck a tree on the east side of the street and was cut in half. The driver and rear seat passenger were both pronounced deceased at the scene. The front seat passenger managed to climb out of the wreckage and left the scene before Officers arrived. He turned up seven hours later at a local hospital with significant injuries.
The identities of all partys involved in this crash are not being released at this time. There were no other vehicles involved. Speed is most certainly a factor in this crash. The Traffic Unit is handling this crash. The Aurora Police Department is asking that anyone with information regarding this crash contact us.

On Tuesday February 5th, 2019 at about 8:20 AM, Aurora Police and Fire responded to E. Iliff Ave and S. Vaughn Way for an accident involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian. Once there they found that a 12 year old girl had attempted to cross Iliff and had been struck by the pickup.
The driver of the pickup and other witnesses immediately stopped to render aid and call 911. The girl was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Despite the medical care she received, she passed away today as a result of her injuries.
The preliminary investigation found that the girl was on her way to school and not using the signaled intersections to cross E. Iliff Ave. She was half-way across Iliff and stepped off the median and into traffic when she was struck by the westbound pickup. There is no evidence of speed or other factors on the part of the pickup driver involved contributing to the cause of this crash. The driver of the pickup has been cooperative and is understandably upset about this tragic accident.
The names of the parties involved in this accident are not being released at this time.

On 01/25/19 at about 0859 hours, Officers responded along with AFR to the report of an accident involving a semi truck fuel tanker at Chambers and Smith Rd.
Investigation indicated that a semi truck was NB on Chambers Rd when the trailer hauling diesel fuel detached from the semi while going over the railroad tracks at the location. One of the drip lines from the trailer ruptured, which resulted in a spill of about 3 gallons of diesel fuel. After detaching, the trailer came to rest on the railroad tracks.
All four directions for the intersection of Smith and Chambers, had to be shut down. Also, traffic for the RTD A-line and Union Pacific Railways, had to be stopped.
The trailer had to be towed from the location and fire personnel cleaned the spilled fuel. The driver of the truck cooperated with the investigation and was charged with Spilling Load on a Highway.
There were no injuries, and no other involved vehicles. The intersection was opened up and rail traffic resumed at about 1035 hours.
