At 6:11AM, Aurora Communications received calls from citizens that a car vs. bicycle crash had occurred on Smith Rd. east of N. Tower Rd. Responding police and medical personnel located the crash in the 19100 block of E. Smith Rd. This location is an industrial area, and there is no lighting on the roadway. It was dark at that time. Smith Rd. is a 2 lane roadway.
Initial investigation indicates that an adult male, wearing dark clothing, was riding a bicycle west along E. Smith Rd., approximately 3 feet from the shoulder, or into the westbound lane of travel. A 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, occupied by an adult male, was traveling westbound, and struck the bicyclist.
Medical personnel transported the bicyclist to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Speed or alcohol / drug impairment do not seem to be a factor at this time.
The Aurora Police Traffic Investigations Unit is actively investigating this crash.
Bicyclists are reminded to always wear reflective gear, and when travelling during darkness to utilize a bicycle lighting system if possible.
The Adams County Coroners office will be releasing the name of the bicyclist, once notification of next of kin is done.
No further information will be released at this time.

On Saturday, October 28, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Aurora Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 14th opportunity in 7 years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
Central Aurora: The Medical Center of Aurora, 1501 S. Potomac St.
Northeast Aurora: Pickens Technical College, 500 Airport Blvd.
Southeast Aurora: Saddle Rock Emergency Room, 22500 E. Dry Creek Rd.
(The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Last October, Americans turned in 366 tons (over 730,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,200 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 12 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 7.1 million pounds—more than 3,500 tons—of pills.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October Take Back Day event, go to the DEA Diversion website.

Officers were stationary in a parking lot near E. Colfax Ave. and Ironton St. when they were made aware of a stolen white Ford F-250 bearing Colorado Plate 297-PMQ, which was eastbound on E Colfax Ave at N Chester St. Officers observed the F-250 approaching, and drove towards the parking lot exit, activating the patrol vehicles overhead lights. The truck immediately accelerated, indicating to the officer that a traffic stop was not plausible. The officer, therefore, shut off his lights, never leaving the parking lot.
Another officer was stationary in a parking-lot at E 30th Ave and N Peoria St, and observed the F-250 travelling northbound into Denver at a high rate of speed.
Aurora Police were then alerted to an auto-pedestrian accident at E Colfax Ave and N Kingston St, in the eastbound lanes. The adult male victim was deceased and it was determined based on witness statements that the F-250 struck the victim as he was crossing the roadway.
This investigation is on-going and the pedestrians identity will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroners office, pending notification of next of kin.
The F-250 has damage to the driver-side front end, to include the headlight being inoperable.

NATURE: Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint- Friday September 1st, 2017
Aurora, Colorado- The Aurora Police Department will be conducting a Stationary Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint on Friday September 1st, 2017 from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. This is part of our continuing commitment to the statewide effort to combat drunk drivers and reduce alcohol related traffic accidents and fatalities. This checkpoint is part of the DUI Checkpoint Colorado program, which kicks off Memorial Day weekend continuing through Labor Day weekend. This checkpoint will be located on Chambers Rd.
Motorists passing through the checkpoint will be contacted briefly by an officer who will be looking for signs of intoxication and/or impairment in the driver. The checkpoint should cause only minor inconvenience to traffic along the targeted roadway, and highly visible signage will be posted leading into the checkpoint screening area. Drivers entering a checkpoint are asked to pay close attention to the officers directing traffic through the area. Motorists should also roll down their drivers’ side window as they approach the screening area. This allows for better communication between the motorist and the officer, quicker screening and a shorter delay overall.
The checkpoint is funded by an N.H.T.S.A. (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) grant in partnership with the “Heat is On” campaign and administered by the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Please contact Traffic Section Commander, Lt. Michael McClelland with any questions.
