On Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at approximately 1:02 p.m. District 2 officers responded to a report of a deceased person inside of 1179 South Waco Street Unit D. When officers arrived they located a deceased female inside the residence.
Detectives and Investigators from the Major Crimes/Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Investigations Unit responded to the scene and took over the investigation. They are actively investigating this case to determine the circumstances involving her death. Information is limited at this time. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office once a positive identification has been made and the next of kin has been notified.

Aurora, Colorado - The Aurora Police Department Traffic Section will be conducting a Stationary Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint on Friday, August 19th, 2016 from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. This is part of our continuing commitment to the statewide effort to combat drunk drivers and reduce alcohol related traffic accidents and fatalities. This checkpoint is part of the DUI Checkpoint Colorado program, which kicks off Memorial Day weekend continuing through Labor Day weekend, and will include more than 100 checkpoints statewide by 11 participating agencies. This checkpoint will be located on Chambers Rd.
Motorists passing through the checkpoint will be contacted briefly by an officer who will be looking for signs of intoxication and/or impairment in the driver. The checkpoint should cause only minor inconvenience to traffic along the targeted roadway, and highly visible signage will be posted leading into the checkpoint screening area. Drivers entering a checkpoint are asked to pay close attention to the officers directing traffic through the area. Motorists should also roll down their drivers’ side window as they approach the screening area. This allows for better communication between the motorist and the officer, quicker screening and a shorter delay overall.
The APD Traffic Section will also have a dozen or so officers out of the streets conducting DUI Saturation Patrols, specifically looking for impaired drivers, during this operational period.
The checkpoint is funded by an N.H.T.S.A. (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) grant in partnership with the “Heat is On” campaign and administered by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The Aurora Civil Service Commission is now accepting applications for Entry Level Police Officers. Applications will be accepted until December the 11th. This application and testing process will be used to establish an eligibility list for Aurora Police Academy Class 2017-1B which is scheduled to start in June of 2017. UPDATE: At approximately 6:15 this evening Aurora Police received a tip that Moori's vehicle was seen in the area of East Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street. Officers canvassing the East Colfax Corridor located her vehicle at East Colfax Avenue and Valentia Street in Denver a short time later. Officers followed her vehicle for a short distance until it was safe to initiate a traffic stop. Once at Colfax and Quebec officers stopped Moori where she was taken into protective custody without incident. The children were found to be unharmed and in good spirits.
Moori was transported to a local hospital and is not expected to be criminal charged in this matter. The children have been turned over to a family member. This case has been referred to the Adams County Department of Human Services for further investigation.

The Aurora Police Department has activated an AMBER Alert for a mother and her four children.
Nikia Moori left her residence in the 3100 Block of Worchester Street in Northwest Aurora at approximately 2:45 this afternoon. She made threats to harm herself and her four children.
Nikia was last seen driving a 2005 Gold Chrysler Pacifica van bearing Colorado Plate QFZ981. The vehicle had a yellow sticker on the back of it.
Nikia is a 28 year old black female who stands 5'2" tall and weighs 135 pounds. She is also pregnant. She was last seen wearing a blue and white tank top and blue jeans.

Aaliyah Moori, 9 year old black female who stands 4'8" tall and has a stocky build. She was last seen wearing a red shirt and black pants.
Jeneaya Fleming, 7 year old black female who stands 4'6" tall and has a skinny build. She was last seen wearing a multi-colored dress.
Heaven Smith, 3 year old back female who stands 2"5" tall. No clothing description is available.
Harmony Smith, 1 year old black female who was last seen wearing a purple dress.

The city of Aurora has changed the way that it charges permit fees for simple construction jobs to make the fees more predictable, simple and fair.
The city’s new flat-rate fee permits allow customers to pay the same permit fee for the same project type, regardless of the job’s value.
Flat-rate fee permits available include everything from water heater and furnace replacements to demolition and commercial roof replacements.
The new flat fee process has no effect on the calculation and collection of city use taxes. The customer must still provide building material costs so the city can accurately estimate city use and county taxes.

On August 3rd, 2016 the Special Victims Unit (SVU) was awarded the 2016 Dan B. Davidson Excellence in Community Inclusion Award by the Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council (CDDC). The award recognizes outstanding examples of inclusion of people with disabilities. The Developmental Disabilities Council recognizes individuals and organizations that have demonstrated visionary practices providing exemplary support for people with disabilities leading to meaningful lives in their neighborhoods and communities.
The award stated the following:
Sergeant Damon Vaz and the Aurora Police Department’s Special Victims Unit are the Colorado leader in the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the justice system by leading the way among justice professionals in preparing for July 1st implementation of mandatory reporting of all crimes against citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), also known as SB109. While the Aurora Police Department’s Special Victims’ Unit (SVU) was initially established to work for justice for abused elders, Sergeant Vaz quickly recognized the need for the Unit to be prepared to include ALL vulnerable populations, including people with I/DD, in its response work. Months prior to mandatory reporting of all crimes against citizens with I/DD went into effect, the Aurora Police Department’s SVU learned the law and worked as if it were the law, not merely a pending mandate. APD’s SVU spearheaded collaboration with adult protective services’ and 17th and 18th Judicial District professionals to establish systems required by SB109 before they were required. They collected data from their responses to crimes where the victim had an I/DD. Sergeant Vaz educates law enforcement professionals throughout the State about APD’s SVU’s experiences with, knowledge about, and collaboration to most effectively implement mandatory reporting of crimes where the victim has an I/DD. Sergeant Vaz and APD’s SVU collaborates with The Arc of Aurora on training and education opportunities for both justice and I/DD professionals.

On Friday July 29, 2016 at 4:06 a.m. officers responded to a man with a gunshot wound at the Carriage Motor Inn located at 9201 East Colfax Avenue.
Upon their arrival officers found two adults and one juvenile in three different areas of the motel suffering from gunshot wounds. All three parties were transported to local hospitals where they are undergoing surgery, and are expected to survive. This is still an active and ongoing investigation, and details are still emerging. We do not have a suspect in custody at this time, and are not looking for anyone else.
